Janathon Day 14 - I feel good!

What a busy day!  This morning it was a beautiful cold crisp sunny January day, Jack frost had turned everything white and sparkley and very pretty!  It was too good an opportuity to miss and we set off with the dog on a nice walk!  No rain, no wind - this is what winter should be like!  However, it was hard walking in some places!  The fields had been churned up by the animals in the very wet weather, leaving deep hoof prints in the mud, combine that with Jack Frost and the result is treacherous!  Anyway, I really enjoyed the walk, not sure about the dog who kept stumbling down frozen holes in the mud!  It was just over 10 miles by the time we got back home. I had lunch then a quick change, and I headed off into town for some retail therapy for me - more walking but I won't push my luck by logging it!!!  :-)

When I got home another quick change (feeling like Mr Ben at this point!) into my running gear and I hit the streets.  I was expecting to feel really crap after walking 10 miles, but I felt surprisingly good!  Maybe my body appreciated the warm up!  Talking of warm up - I have decided today I am definitely not a "proper" runner!  Although the sun was shining it was still FREEEEEZING cold and every runner I saw today seemed to be attired in shorts and T shirts!  WHY FFS?  Its January and its COLD!! Perhaps that's why everyone else runs faster than me - they are running to get home before frostbite sets in! Whereas, there's me in fleecy running tights, long sleeve top,  running gilet, hat and gloves and I wasn't overheating! Anyhow, I did a short 3 miler and felt really energetic!

Day 13 Jananthon AND FRIDAY 13th - yikes!!!

Today is not just another Jananthon day.
Today is not just any other Friday.
Today is Friday the 13th, and if you are superstitious
Today is a day to lock your doors and stay inside.

Luckily for me and my Janathon attempt I am NOT superstitious and managed to get out for an earlier run than usual.

When I got in from work, instead of the usual sit down with a coffee (fatal) I went straight upstairs and changed into my running gear and hit the streets.  But my word, it was a cold one, the coldest run yet and considering the date and the icy paths I'm surprised I made it home without any mishaps!  Even with my gloves on, my fingers were white and numb by the time I got home!

As I am going out this evening, I'd planned just a short run.  This was lucky for me as my legs felt sooo heavy tonight! I'm not sure whether this is the straight from work effect or just because its Day 13!

Weekend at last - longer runs planned for a couples of days, legs willing!

Day 12 - Janathon - still with it!

I have been evaluating my training today and trying to work out if I'm on target with the training programme for the Liverpool Half Marathon!  I was shocked to discover its only 65 days away, and 19 of those are Janathon days, leaving 46 remaining days to compile a suitable training plan to increase my speed! I WILL increase my speed sufficiently to get a PB - if this Janathon running doesn't help me, nothing will!!! My husband said this evening "I don't know what you're stressing about, you'll walk it!!!" lol If I WALK it I certainly won't get the PB I'm craving!!  Hehehehehe!!

It has been a gorgeous bright but cold day and it was a beautiful clear cold evening tonight, perfect for a run!  I didn't even have to do too much persuading to get myself out the house!  I did the ironing, put it away (a job I hate more than ironing!) and then hit the streets - perfect unwinding strategy!  The run was uneventful, and I had no problems with my legs or my blisters (well protected may I add!).  Whilst I was out I saw several other runners and cyclists taking advantage of the unusually dry conditions.  I wonder what they all do when its wet? Vegetate in front of the telly or hit the gym?!!

Anyhow I ran 5.22 miles, not too bad for Day 12!  I might start increasing my mileage by a mile every couple of  days and see what my legs think! I need to be increasing my speed over longer runs!

Running Miles: 5.22miles

Average pace: 10.23
Average speed: 5.8 MPH

Total Janathon Running miles:  51.42

I set myself a target at the beginning of  this Janathon to run at least 100 miles during the month -  Its day 12 and I'm half way to my target with 51.42 miles!
If I don't collapse with exhaustion and do keep running everyday I will exceed my goal!!  WHOOHOO!!!

Day 11 Janathon - BRRRRRRRRR!!!

Someone said to me yesterday when I was stating my frustration at not improving my pace much that it was early in the season! QUESTION FOR ALL YOU RUNNERS (that is if anyone actually reads this!) - Is there a SEASON for running?  I thought running (a bit like football on the telly!) was an all year round activity!! If it does have seasons, another question - WHEN WILL I BE IN SEASON? lol

After a day at work, I came home and donned my wellies to take the dog out for a walk, and although I was well wrapped up I was freeeeezing cold! The dog got a very short, brisk walk, which being the lazy hound he is had him wagging his tail with glee when he realised we were on our way home! I ended up doing just over half a mile, I don't usually log such pathetic distances but perhaps I should start, they all add up in the end!!! :-)

I got back to my nice warm house, and sat down with a cup of coffee and my book - fatal mistake! I had to give myself a good stern talking to to get myself upstairs into my running gear and back out into the big wide freezing cold world!  The dog looked at me slyly through sleepy eyes and he was no doubt thinking "Rather you than me!", hence why he is overweight and on a diet! Perhaps I should invent a dogathon to see how many miles he can walk in a month, and how many pounds he can lose!

Anyhow, by the time I had had my coffee, stuffed my face with chocolate birthday cake and got changed into my running gear it was raining, but maybe this had warmed it up a bit because it didn't seem nearly as chilly!  That will teach me to dither around - If I'd gone straight away I wouldn't have got wet! My leg felt OK tonight however another problem developed, a blister on my right sole!  I have worn the same trainers for many miles with no problems so I don't know why they have decided to rub tonight - perhaps I had a crinkle in my sock!  I will have to get some "Compeed"  plasters before I hit the streets tomorrow night! I would like to say I ran at a slow pace because I was aiming for a rest run pace, but this would be a lie - I thought I was running at a reasonable pace but evidently not!!

Bring on tomorrow - see what I can do!

Running Miles: 4.00 miles
Time: 41 minutes, 40 seconds.

Janathon - Day 10

Is it the 31st January Yet? Oh well nearly a third of the way through this crazy idea! Who would believe that exercising and blogging everyday could be such a challenge - I would certainly challenge anyone to do it who dares suggest this is easy!!!

I actually felt quite good tonight!  My night at the gym must have been enough to rest my Achilles!  I set out with a 3 miler in mind but because my body was willing I kept going!!  The weather was also on my side for a change, no rain, no wind and very mild!  However, with seemingly perfect running conditions I didn't pass another runner which I thought was strange - perhaps they have a secret rendezvous place I don't know about!  As I already mentioned I set out to do 3 miles and managed 6 miles - could have gone further but didn't want to push my luck with another 21 days to survive!

My training plan for the half marathon stipulates the necessity for rest days to ensure the body recovers and rebuilds, however this Janathon isn't permitting me to follow these rules. Reading deeper into my programme it does state that if you don't want to take rest days (why on earth would anyone NOT want to rest?!!!)  to do "easy" runs instead. (2 to 4 easy miles below 60% of maximum heart rate ), so perhaps next time I'm feeling "in need" of a rest day I will try an easy run so my body doesn't force me to rest completely!

I have realised training for this half marathon the error of my ways whilst training for the Great North Run!  I was obsessed about mileage - the further the better with no regard to pace, however I now realise the importance of challenging myself to short fast spurts as well as longer runs!  Quality rather than just quantity is my new motto!

Janathon - Day 9

Well, Day 9 and I think my body has had enough!  My Achilles is still grumbling when I'm walking and shouting very loudly at me when I am going up or down stairs so I decided to take care and err on the side of caution tonight  by going to the Gym instead of hitting the streets!   I don't have a gym yearly membership but use the "pay as you go" scheme as I'd much rather be exercising outdoors if at all possible, therefore I wouldn't get my moneys worth out of a yearly subscription!  (I don't think!)

Anyhow, I reasoned that there must be benefits to going to the gym when I'm not feeling 100% fit, and treadmill running is definitely preferable to no running!  The main benefits I see in running on a treadmill is they have sprung platforms therefore the impact stress on the body is reduced (I hope!), secondly you can set the pace you would like to run on the treadmill and you don't have a lot of choice but to keep up or look an idiot and fall off, so I'm hoping it can help me to increase my speed. Thirdly there is no wind, rain, dog mess or puddles - you leave the outside world - outside!!!

As I said I was being kind to my old, worn out body so I set the treadmill to a slowish speed with a slight incline, and plodded along in my own little world for 30 minutes!  The most annoying thing being that one of my earphones wasn't working so I only had music blasting down one ear, a very strange sensation!

After managing a fairly pathetic 2.48 miles running I did some stretching before I took to the bike!  I reasoned working different muscles could only be good!  I managed 30 minutes on the bike and covered 4.18 miles!

My main concern is not overdoing it and putting myself out of action  for the Liverpool Half Marathon on the 18th March 2012!  I will run gently and fingers crossed things will improve.

Janathon - Day 8 - RWH!

As I mentioned yesterday it is my Daughter's 16th Birthday today and last night she had a party in the house with approximately 30 guests - we went to our neighbours house (bad move all round!)!  Stained carpets, smashed bottles and glasses, broken breakfast bar stool, snapped plant and a visit from the police were just some of the events of the evening...!  Luckily for her I was too intoxicated by liquor myself to be too bothered about the chaos going on around me when I got home just after midnight!

I never sleep well when I've been drinking and last night was no exception!  I was awake at 5am, and eventually decided to get up at 6.30am!  Feeling slightly queasy I set about filling the recycling bin with a vast combination of bottles and cans and doing a general tidy up! Once the house looked a little less like it had been trashed by burglars I ventured outside taking the dog on a  walk to gauge how my body would react to exercise! I had a general feeling of ickiness, a pounding head and churning stomach and decided to make it a short walk.  I was grateful to get  home without vomiting in the street or passing out and I decided languishing on the sofa groaning loudly and watching  TV was the order of the day!

Run with a Hangover (RWH)
However, I'm not very good at sitting around doing nothing so a couple of hours later I decided to bite the bullet and RWH! I thought a short run might help move the alcohol and its nasty toxins out of my system - Alcohol is evil but I will never learn!  Whilst I'd been sitting around doing very little I had tried to rehydrate my body by drinking plenty of water and I managed to stomach a banana.

Well, I eventually got up off the sofa and ran, but felt like death the entire time! Perhaps I was still drunk who knows?

As my Achilles was still feeling  delicate (as well as my head and stomach now) I decided to try to run on soft tracks and trails and not so much on the road!  Yet again it was raining the wet stuff - very, very, very fine rain but very wet all the same!!

I managed a 3.32 mile run, but it felt more like a half marathon!  I didn't feel on top of the world afterwards  and the endorphins certainly didn't seem to kick in!!

At home I showered, ate and then settled back down onto the sofa (the safe sanctuary I shouldn't have left!) - this time however football was on and my husband had control of the remote!

Later in the day, once the rain had stopped I decided to venture out again (kill or cure) and managed a short fairly enjoyable walk!

All in all its been a long tiring day and I'm now ready for my bed!

"I promise that I will do my best, to love my legs and my body, to detox this week so I have the will to run and keep the Janathon going "

Janathon - DAY 7,

Well, what a busy day I've had!  This morning I had to do an emergency dash into town to buy birthday presents, cards, wrapping paper etc. for my daughter's 16th Birthday tomorrow - yup I know, not very organised but its too close to Christmas to be organised!  Bad planning on my part giving birth in January!
Came home and of course had to wrap what I'd bought, then tidy the house!!  In hindsight this was probably a silly idea as she is having a house party tonight with approximately 30 friends, but she does have some posh friends and I don't want to show her up! lol  Anyhow presents bought and wrapped, house cleaned and birthday decorations in place, party food and drink at the ready so at last ... ME time!

Of course it was raining yet again, but thankfully today it was just a drizzle and an added bonus was I managed to get out before it got dark!  This doesn't happen very often at the moment, but then again if you ask my delightful children they will say I should only be allowed out in the dark when I'm wearing the winter hat I wear to run in!!

I was aiming for a comfortable pace shortish run and enjoyed being out, however after about 2 miles I appeared to develop an Achilles strain on my right foot.  When I got home I stretched and iced it and fingers crossed it won't develop into anything major!

Anyway, guests will be arriving soon, me and my husband are homeless for the evening (can't have embarrassing parents present!), but we aren't going far - just to neighbours, so I will have to say farewell for now.  I hope I manage to run tomorrow with a sore Achilles and no doubt a hangover!

Janathon - DAY 6, Getting tired already!

When I got up this morning the weather looked promising - cold, frosty BUT Dry! I didn't even complain about having to de-ice the car!  Unfortunately due to having to go to work I wasn't able to run until this evening by which time the weather had changed!

So... it looks like I am back to my original plan - nails, wood, hammer at the ready, contacted Noah for plans, now ... whose willing to help build it?!!

Tonight I went out running in the rain, nothing unusual there I hear you say, but the rain tonight was the type that gets you VERY wet!! You are probably thinking "It's rain, it's water, that's what water does - it gets you wet!".  However, there are many different types of rain and living in the Lake District I am an expert in this field - heavy rain, fine rain, driving rain, sleety rain, drizzle, but today's rain was almost like a mist.  I didn't actually notice it was raining whilst I was out, but when I got home I was completely soaked - and today it wasn't all sweat, I know this because my feet were sodden too!!!

Anyhow, after yesterdays effort's the legs were less willing today.  I was keen to set a good pace again, mainly because its Friday night and I wanted to get home before wine o'clock, but the body and mind weren't cooperating! I have come to the conclusion that I must run on solar batteries and mine are in urgent need of a recharge!  Why?  Well, the little bit of sunshine I enjoyed yesterday was enough to power my legs to run the fastest they have ever run, so to achieve my dream and goal of a 2 hour half marathon I am in desperate need of some more sunshine! Perhaps a foreign holiday is in order...

As my batteries were running low I kept the run relatively short this evening, and managed 4.21 miles but was disappointed to see my pace had indeed decreased after my high of yesterday.  Perhaps I'm craving a rest day already... NO I WILL NOT GIVE IN!!

Janathon 2012 - DAY 5

When I woke up this morning to another horrendous downpour an idea came to mind, instead of my daughter having her 16th Birthday party on Saturday I was going to amend the invitations to read:

"Ark building party at my house! Bring two of your favourite animals!"

I was at work until 3.30pm, and around about lunchtime we all had a bit of a shock - there was a big yellow thing up in the sky and it was sending weird heat through our classroom window. It was so bright that I have had to turn the light off for the first time since starting back at school. We asked the kids "Does anyone know what it is?".  Funnily enough they were slightly unsure as this is such a rare occurrence in Cumbria!!!

Once home and after completing my usual chores I felt excited about going out for my run - WITHOUT getting wet!!  Someone up there must have been listening to me!

A running friend said I needed to push myself more to gain speed and challenged me to run 6 miles in an hour equating to a 10 minute mile.  This might not sound much to many of you reading this but for me this is FAST!!  Bear in mind that I only started running in May 2011 and my pace for my first 3 mile run was an embarrassing 12.01 minute mile (average!).

Anyhow, In high spirits from the afternoons crisp sunshine and buoyant blue sky I set foot out the house and immediately shivered as a frost chill hung in the air, but as I was well wrapped up and it was dry I wasn't fazed at all!  I had purposefully selected a flat route to give me a sporting chance of achieving the set goal and felt motivated and determined to succeed!  Ask anyone who knows me - I love nothing better than being challenged, well actually that's a lie - I love succeeding at a challenge better!!

I set off at a slow pace to warm up and slowly increased my speed to the required pace.  By 4 miles I was doubting my ability to maintain this pace for the final 2 miles but kept thinking about failing this challenge - not an option!

I was delighted when my house came into view, and I didn't have soggy feet for the first time in weeks, although I was still wet through - this time by sweat, perhaps I'd overestimated how many layers I needed!!!  I'm on a learning curve - not used to training in the winter!

I excitedly stopped my Garmin watch and viewed the average pace!  I was ecstatic and the running  endorphins had obviously been released as I was experiencing euphoric feelings!!!  The watch confirmed I had succeeded - I had managed 6 miles in 56 minutes 43 seconds, an average pace of 9.31 and speed of 6.3MPH!

My non-running friends and family don't understand how such a simple accomplishment can cause such an uplift in mood!!!   I have even stopped posting my runs to my facebook timeline, and instead post them on the FB plodders page because I am beginning to be called obsessed by those who don't have a clue!  I will stick to sharing my experiences (and hopefully get encouragement and motivation!)  with those who are on the same page as me!!

Janathon 2012 - DAY 4

Yet another Wet, wet, wet day!!!  My half marathon training plan tip of the day a few weeks ago was :  "Run in all weathers as you never know what the weather will be doing on the event day".  Well, I think I have now had enough practise in wind, rain and hail and its time I practised in the nice warm sunshine!  Anyone up there listening?

I work in a school, so I'm sure if I wore a pedometer all day I would win this hands-down with all the running around I do after the kids!!!  However, I'm sure that wouldn't be counted!

I finished work at 3.30pm and it had rained non-stop all day, but I had to take the dog out for a walk come what may!  I donned my wet weather gear and wellies and traipsed through huge puddles and rivers of mud, fighting against gale force winds with an equally unimpressed dog in tow!  Oh the joys of living in the Lake District! I managed to persuade the dog to walk 1.3 miles with a struggle - he's definitely a fair weather dog!!  He does his business and then looks at me as if to say "OK can I go home now?!".

I dried off, made tea and did all the other million jobs us women have to do, and then I decided to brave the Great British weather for a second time today and go for a run - this time alone!

The rain and wind still hadn't improved but as someone said to me a few weeks ago "Man it out - you only get wet once!" - very true, by the time I got to the end of the street I was drenched to the skin with soggy socks!  Undeterred I kept running!  I actually saw several other equally stupid runners out this evening which surprised me!

I got home after managing a rather wet 4.34 miles, had a shower and food then settled down with my laptop and Garmin to upload my run!  After days of trying (and failing!) I actually worked out how to upload my Garmin to Runkeeper as well as to Garmin Connect!   I don't need to record my runs twice any more!!  I'm a one device girl now!!  Whoo Hoo!!!

Janathon 2012 - DAY 3

First day back at work today after the Christmas break and so decided to walk to work to work off some of the excesses of the season!!  Cold and windy but dry walk there this morning and even managed to get home this afternoon without getting wet!

However, the story changed when I went for my run this evening!  I set off in cold crisp weather conditions and by the time I got 1 mile in the rain started, which very soon changed into hail stones!  The hail came down so hard it actually hurt as it ricocheted off my face and hands!  To add insult to injury around about the same time my zip of my jacket broke so I had a flapping jacket flaring behind me in the wind which was in my opinion, equivalent to doing parachute resistance training!!!  However, undeterred I was determined to continue my selected 5 mile route!

Yet again, I seemed to be the target of the game "Lets soak idiotic runners" by smug car drivers!  I was feeling rather smug myself when 4 miles in I actually overtook another runner - this is a first for me, usually I'm the one constantly being overtaken!!  I had a major decision to make as I approached the runner, do I hang back and follow or do I overtake and have the added pressure of having to maintain the faster pace.  I decided to go for it and was actually quite chuffed with how much it pushed me on!  I think I may have found a new speed training method that works for me - chasing other runners!!

I made it home soaking wet through but feeling exhilarated!

Janathon 2012 - DAY 2

First run of 2012! After spending the day trying to "de-Christmas" the house and restore a bit of normality to things it was time to hit the streets!  The weather had been appalling all day - constant driving rain.  However, it did decide to stop so I jumped at the opportunity to go out!  I enjoyed being out in the fresh air after being cooped up over the holidays, and tried to take things gently after overindulging in food and alcohol - I didn't want to shock my body too much!!

Although the rain had stopped, huge puddles had collected both on the pavements and the roads, and there seemed to be a lot of people who must have set a New Year Resolution of "Driving through puddles to soak runners!" . So I was continuously playing dodging puddles on the pavements and predicting which idiots were going to try and soak me!!! About 3 miles into my run the weather changed and huge hailstones decided to pelt me - leaving the pavements not only with puddles but now very slippery and there was the potential of me landing on my backside! Luckily for me the hailstones were short-lived!

Reading the above, you probably think I didn't enjoy my first run of 2012, but being a glutton for punishment I actually did!!

Janathon 2012 - DAY 1

The weather this morning was blowing a gale and rain was thrashing it down!  I sat with my family after celebrating New Years Eve desperate for some exercise to blow the cobwebs away, however the weather was so bad it didn't appear a possibility.

Nonetheless the weather slowly improved and we grabbed the window of opportunity when the rain stopped to go for a walk.  Kitted out in waterproofs and walking boots we set out for the scenic walk around Tarn Hows with the kids moaning and grumbling that it was bound to start raining again!  Luckily for us we managed the short 2 mile walk and just got back to the car before the mist descended and the rain commenced!

Although I have walked on Day One of this challenge, my intention is to run for the remaining 30 days which will be a fantastic kick-start to my training for the Liverpool Half Marathon I am running on the 18th March 2012!

Janathon 2012

Happy New Year to you all!!!  I have just got in from a very busy weekend seeing the New Year in with all my family.  Feeling a little tired after overindulging in drink and food I settled down with my faithful laptop and Google to catch up with what was going on in the world and stumbled upon the Janathon 2012.

It seems pretty simple JOG - LOG -BLOG, the bit that makes it hard is its EVERYDAY in January!

My initial thoughts were "I would love to do that but its10pm on the 1st January and I'm sat here a little worse for wear with no intentions of jumping up off my sofa to fit a jog in!".  However, as I read the rules I realised that it was ANY exercise rather than just jogging and as I'd been on a family New Years walk this afternoon I was still eligible to participate and succeed with this challenge, so I registered and here I am!

Janathon here we start our journey!

Motivation - NOT!

I was feeling like I needed some sort of training plan for my next half marathon and so logged on to the ASICS webpage - BIG MISTAKE!!

I filled out the questionnaire appropriately and waited for a suitable plan to appear!  Instead I got the extremely demotivating comment that if I proceeded with this plan it would be to the detriment of my health!!  FFS I only said I wanted to complete a half marathon in 2 hours NOT a marathon!

I now think my dream 2 hours is out my reach ...!!!

Well its Christmas ... another drink ... another chocolate and I'll worry about it in 2012!!!

Update on my pose running technique!

I have been practising forefoot running for a couple of weeks now and it still doesn't come naturally!  I'm still unable to sustain it for the full duration of my longer runs as the top of my foot becomes very sore.  I'm sure this is just different muscles working and in time will adapt!  Unfortunately, I've been restricted to the amount of outdoor running I've been doing due to snow and ice, and have been staying safe on the treadmill.  However, once I get this technique perfected apparently ice will no longer be a problem to me!!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_pNb01YoSA

Discovering Pose Running!!!

My daughter had a spinal operation in July and has been seeing an Alexander Posture Technique teacher to help aid her recovery. During one of these sessions I got onto the subject of running and discovered that she was also a Pose Running teacher. After going home and researching this running method I became very interested in learning more and went on to book a workshop.

Today was the day I was educated in the pose running method!

I was slightly daunted at the thought as I knew I was going to be videoed running and was terrified my current style was going to be picked to pieces. However, more about that later!

First let me try and explain!

The pose method is all about making the most of the effect of gravity rather than fight against it. The running pose is a whole body pose, which vertically aligns shoulders, pelvis and ankles with the support leg, while supported on the ball of the foot.

Sounds completed but once you get going it makes a lot of sense.

Main points I learned today
  • I change the pose from one leg to the other by falling forward and allowing gravity to do the work.
  • The support foot is pulled quickly from the ground using the hamstrings.
  • A slight forward lean of the body allows the body to fall forward from the ankle.
  • The other foot drops down freely to become a new support.
Apparently, this creates forward movement using the least energy and effort.  The end result (I hope) is faster running with no injuries!!! The cadence should be at least 180 footfalls per minute! Also apparently, this makes it much easier to learn to land on the ball of the foot and shorten the stride.

Anyhow, how did it go?  Well, I found it all fascinating!  When I first got there I was introduced to the rationale and history of the technique before being taken into a local park and told to warm up and run in my normal style whilst I was videoed.  I felt very self conscience at this point and its very hard to run naturally when someone is following you with a video camera! However, after enduring this slightly humiliating experience I was shown some pose running exercises which I then practised under her supervision. Once she was happy I'd mastered the exercises adequately, she showed me how to transfer these new skills into my running style.  We ran together whilst she gave me verbal instructions and advice. Going up hills seemed much easier using this technique but coming downhill I felt I was going to end up flat on my face!  I suppose practise is required to feel confident.  At the end of the outdoor session she videoed me again running in my new style before we headed back indoors to study the evidence!  It was very interesting and not as embarrassing as I'd thought to watch myself running!

What did I learn about my running?

After watching the video at normal speed, we watched it frame by frame so we could analysis what I do whilst running. It was quite amusing to discover that I have one arm (my right) that does what its supposed to do and my left arm is immobile and rigid! I had no idea I did this, and it could explain my neck and shoulder stiffness I suffer after running! I also heel strike and over-stride (again explaining my knee and hip pain) as well as looking down at the ground instead of where I'm going! Quite a few things to work on!!!

However, after analysing the second video I was impressed to see that I had in fact corrected  all these except my arms still weren't as relaxed as they should be! She told me to help me do this I was to imagine holding 2 hamsters in my hands firmly but not squashing them!!!

I have been sent out into the running world to practise, practise, practise!!!  I have been advised to introduce the technique gradually into my runs as it uses completely different muscles then I usually use whilst running!!

I'm quite excited about going out for a run tomorrow and putting all these new skills into practise!!  My homework this evening is to find some music to run to which has 180 beats a minute!!!  Any suggestions welcome!

Running club update - I feel like Goldilocks!

The fast group was too fast, the slower group was too slow, I want one that is just right!

On Monday night I braved the "slow" running club group and was very nervous and apprehensive after suffering humiliation the previous week. Determined not to give up I turned up bracing myself for a good pace run.

We set off and within minutes I realised this group was at the total opposite end of the spectrum! Three of us set a good pace out in front but at every corner and turn we had to wait for the rest of the group to catch up as we didn't know the route we were running! I began to feel some sympathy for the "fast" group last week who had to keep waiting for us, however I did feel some compassion for the runners we were waiting for... its not a nice feeling I know!!!

I'm not sure where this leaves me ... running on my bill again or concentrating on my speed for a few weeks before braving the "fast" group again?

I enjoyed the social aspect of running with other people  - just need an intermediate group!

Perhaps that could be my new role - intermediate running group leader!!!

BIG Mistake - I joined a running club!

A friend who I met at Pilates and Steps class is a member of Helm Runners in Kendal and persuaded me to go along as it would be a good way to improve my running speed!!  She said that they ran at recovery speed rather than race speed so I wouldn't find it too fast!  She also said that they have a motto "We never leave anyone behind!".  Luckily for me another friend came along with me and it was only whilst waiting in the foyer of the sports centre we were told that there was a "slow" running group which had left 15 minutes earlier!  We were mortified at being left with the "elite" runners!

We were told we'd be fine and we decided to stay at the back of the group!  We were off - like a rat out of a trap - and by the time we got to the top of the first hill we were way behind!  Feeling sorry for the newcomers the rest of the group waited for us to catch up, and then placed someone behind us to round us up!!  It was the most humiliating experience of my life, I'd much rather have been left to make our own way at our own pace!! Determined as they were not to leave us at first; eventually the majority of the group did, leaving the leader to coax us along at a more appropriate speed for us!!

We made it back to the sports centre after completing a 5 mile circuit, feeling totally unfit, useless and with very little running confidence left! However, we did manage to laugh at ourselves and have vowed to give the "slow" group a go next Monday night!!  If they are still too fast for me I will be giving up my running career completely because my sub 2 hour half marathon goal is unrealistic!

I will let you know how we fair ...!!!

Whoops I've done it again!

Well, after doing the Great North Run and vowing never to run again I have now entered The Liverpool Half Marathon on the 18th March 2012!  I have decided that the GNR was too busy to do my best and I want another opportunity to see what I can do!! Aiming for 2 hours this time! (Hahaha!).  Training over the winter months could be interesting....!

We started our new Challenge!

Yesterday, Sunday 2nd October 2011 my Husband David, myself and Dog Sabre set out to conquer our first Wainwright fell walk in our 214 challenge.  We had decided to attempt a walk that would include 4 fells, called “A Swindale Round”, and it turned out to be awful weather conditions and poor visibility!
